Since sometime in July, West Island has been graced with the presence of “Westie,” a friendly and colorful rock monster started by MaryAnn Tomase Folley.
“Meet ‘Westie,’ our very own Nessie!” reads the sign next to Westie’s head on the bottom of Causeway Road. “Add a painted rock to see just how long he can get!!”
The sign suggests adding an address to the rock.
Scores of people obliged, adding hundreds of painted rocks and shells. They have addresses, words of wisdom, pictures of sea creatures and rainbows and nautical themes and beaches and so much more.
Even a baby Incredible (I think it’s Jack-Jack Parr, but don’t hold me to it) is riding a shark.
Ms. Folley posted on the West Island Facebook page on 7/21: “My how he has grown. Let’s see if we can get him all the way to the NECK.”
And it appears people are trying to do just that.
WI residents have held craft nights to paint rocks and shells to add to Westie, and he has been an all round fun topic of discussion all season.
Westie can be observed in his natural habitat along the sidewalk at the very start of Causeway Road. If you go, please don’t do anything to disturb him, but feel free to add a colorful rock or shell to his tail.
