On February 1, Fairhaven Town Hall employee (and Neighb News Acushnet reporter) Pattie Pacella was recognized for her 10 years of service as Treasurer at The Centre (formerly Centre-Trinity Church) in New Bedford.
The Unlikely Strummers serenaded Ms. Pacella with “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” in a surprise visit.
“I was having a rough morning,” wrote Ms. Pacella on her Facebook page with the video. “…was a bit speechless, a lil overwhelmed & surprised when these people offered a surprise song to me at work… Thank you Centre friends!!!”
The Unlikely Strummers have approximately 25-30 people who gather to play together. They have performed at nursing homes, senior centers, corporate parties, fairs, museums and even ball games!
All donations go back to the community in the form of ukuleles given to local libraries with tuners so others may try out and fall in love with the instrument! New Bedford library received one this summer as part of their summer reading program.
The group is currently raising money for the Kids Club which donates ukuleles to children in long term care hospitals. Members come from all over the area from just south of Boston to Wareham easterly and into Rhode Island.
“Our passion is to bring the joy of music to all we meet!” wrote Sharon Corey in an email.
