Looking for a way to keep the whole family entertained during February vacation? Fill up your free week with self-guided, outdoor activities that are centered at The Sawmill in Acushnet but can be done at any nearby nature reserve (260-plus listed on DiscoverBuzzardsBay.org) or in your own backyard.
In lieu of in-person events, the Coalition has organized a set of suggested activities and guides that can be used by children, adults and families. The goal is to spend time in the outdoors and discover the beauty of the Buzzards Bay region’s natural resources, while following social distancing precautions. Visit https://www.savebuzzardsbay.org
The week’s activities include:
Winter Wildlife Walk: Take a hike in the woods, along wetlands (or even by the beach) to search for signs of wildlife in tracks left in the snow or dirt with this guide to animal tracks (https://www.savebuzzardsbay.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Animal-Tracking.pdf) .
Busy Birds: Head to a local beach or lake with our winter bird and waterfowl guide (https://www.savebuzzardsbay.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Winter-Bird-Guide.pdf) and see how many winter visitors you can spot. Extra credit: collect pine cones and coat them with peanut butter and bird seed and hang them up for your backyard birds.
One-Mile Challenge: Burn off some energy with a virtual trail running competition. Join our Strava club (https://www.strava.com/clubs/buzzards-bay-coalition-845994) and see how quickly you can complete a mile at a local trail.
Scavenger Hunt: Bring the whole family for a fun activity, identifying as many native plants and animals as you can using our scavenger hunt list as your guide (https://www.savebuzzardsbay.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Winter-2021-Scavenger-Hunt.pdf.
