A fire got out of control and engulfed a home at 115 Ebony Street in Fairhaven after the owner was burning in the fire pit outside on Monday, 11/18/24.
“The wind took it and it just went woosh,” Ray Butler, 90, told firefighters on the scene.
Several neighbors said they also heard two explosions, that were most likely from gas cans in the shed.
According to a Fairhaven Fire Department press release, the fire went from the fire pit to a shed that held lawn equipment, including a propane tank, and then spread to the deck and the north side of the house.
“It was determined that a fire in an outside fire pit several feet away from the residence was the cause. Fire damage to the house is significant, the cost is unknown at this time,” states the press release. “Fire Chief Todd Correia would like to reiterate the previous order under the authority of the State Fire Marshal, that no outdoor fires are permitted at this time.”
There were no injuries. Firefighters did locate an uninjured cat and released him to Animal Control.
Mutual aid to the scene included; Acushnet EMS, a Mattapoisett engine, and a New Bedford Engine. Acushnet Fire engine provided station coverage.
