Hetty Green

June 24, 2026 by Staff Writer

Hetty Green invites financial experts, neighbors, friends and enemies to speak with and listen to her Tea and Talk at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, 33 William Street, at 2:pm on Sunday, June 28. All programs offered at the NBWHP welcome the public and offer free admission.

Dr. Irene Duprey-Gutierrez, 30 year volunteer at the National Park, will discuss why Mrs. Green has been called the”witch” of Wall Street and followed with a Q and A.

Hetty was an early financial  investor, especially for a woman, in the 1900s of a wild period in history. She, born and raised in Bedford Village (New Bedford), was the richest American woman.

Hetty began buying Civil War bonds which most others avoided but gained pay at 5 percent. Then she expanded with real estate, railroads and gold mines. When she died in 1916, her son and daughter inherited her $100,000,000 to $200,000,000 inheritance (today equal $3,055,229,357 -$6,110,458,715).
