We have lots of fun stuff in this week’s issue, including lots of events coming up in the next couple of weeks.
It’s the middle of August, so it’s time to get all those outdoor fun things in before you have to start worrying about school nights.
This weekend we have three fun events: The teddy bear parade on Saturday, the annual NFIA car show on Sunday, and a movie night courtesy of the Fairhaven Firefighters union, also on Sunday. All three events are free. See page 3 for details.
Our cover story is always a fun event to go to, the annual music night in Benoit Square (see page 12). Old cars, old music, and people of all ages enjoying the evening. What’s not to like?
The Acushnet soccer kids made it all the way to the states this year. See page 11 for some recognition they got from the Selectboard.
Bottle rockets flew through the air this week. See page 14 for some cool pics by Jim Mahaney.
UMassDartmouth is leaving the Star Store building, and blindsided the city with the announcement (see page 4). That will be a big blow to downtown. The influx of students, starting 20 years ago, was a welcome anchor for downtown that was struggling to get people there. I remember I used to drive through downtown to make it look busy. Then, I avoided it because it WAS busy. Now, downtown New Bedford is a bustling place. Businesses are successful. People want to work there, live there, have fun there. It didn’t happen all at once, but the students were a huge part of it happening at all.
Alas, it’s always about the money, isn’t it?
