Egg Hunt
Dear Frankie,
Every year, there’s a neighborhood egg hunt at the dog park. It’s a big deal. Just about everyone comes if they’re not on crutches or at death’s door.
Dogs of every size, shape, and age join in, and that’s where the trouble begins. The big adolescent male dogs always get the most eggs. They run the fastest and body-slam anyone who gets in their way when they see an egg.
Do you think there should be a separate hunt for small dogs, puppies, old dogs, and big dogs?
I’m a 10-year-old Pekingese. What chance do I have against an adolescent Rottweiler?
Turner
Dear Turner,
Well, body slamming certainly shouldn’t be accepted at a holiday event.
Whoever is in charge needs to put a stop to it and make it clear that dogs that body slam will be banned from participating in future hunts. Boys will be boys has its place, but not at an egg hunt.
One idea to level the playing field might be to give the puppies and older dogs a five-minute head start, followed by the small dogs, who get three minutes before the big dogs start.
Another idea is to put five eggs in the puppies’ and older dogs’ baskets, three in the smaller dogs’ baskets, and one in the big boys’ baskets before the hunt starts, to ensure that no basket goes home empty.
Thinking about it, I like my second suggestion best.
Best, Frankie
