Weather Beaten
Dear Frankie,
The weather this winter is really getting me down. Endless days of freezing temperatures and cloudy skies that darken by 4 o’clock are hard to handle.
During the blizzard, we lost power and were housebound for three days. The town plows pushed snow up against the dog park fence. It took two weeks for the snow to melt before we could open the gate.
My dad offered to schedule a Zoom call with my friends, which I appreciated. But it was a joke. Most of my friends have older parents who, I wouldn’t be surprised, still use rotary phones.
Why has the weather taken such a toll on me?
Selzer
Dear Selzer,
This is the first year in years we have had this much snow and cold weather. So, you haven’t experienced not seeing your friends and exercising for extended periods before.
Now that you know the kind of weather winter can bring, use your time to plan some social activities for future years. If you or one of your friends has a large garage, an indoor swimming pool, or a large basement, how about getting together there?
I’m sure most of your friends’ parents have a computer and could be taught to Zoom. You might also think about how to entertain yourself when you can’t get out. Being able to enjoy time alone is an important life skill that everyone should develop.
It’s also important to keep in mind that winter is three months long, not a life sentence. Before you know it, the birds will be back, and the daffodils will be blooming.
Best, Frankie
