Press Release from State Sen. Mark Montigny, State Rep. Mark Sylvia, State Rep. Steven Ouellette
A home rule petition filed on behalf of the Town of Acushnet by Representative Mark Sylvia, Senator Mark Montigny and Representative Steven Ouellette, has been signed into law by Governor Healey.
House Bill 2341, authorized by Acushnet Town Meeting, amends the Acushnet Town Charter by striking Section 3-1-2, which previously imposed a two-year waiting period for reappointment to paid Town positions following the expiration of a term. Removal of this provision provides the Town with greater flexibility in appointments while maintaining local oversight and governance standards. The change will also help the town recruit local candidates for vacant positions.
“Home rule petitions like H.2341 allow municipalities to tailor their governing documents to best serve their residents,” said Rep. Mark Sylvia. “This legislation respects local decision-making and supports effective town governance.”
“Town voters sent a clear mandate that they want flexibility and control over who can best serve their community,” said Senator Mark Montigny. “Thank you to David Wojnar and the Board of Selectmen for their steadfast advocacy on behalf of the town and for my legislative colleagues Representatives Sylvia and Ouellette for ensuring a seamless process through the legislature.”
“I’m pleased to take part in this initiative,” said Rep. Steve Ouellette. “The delegation acted quickly to support the Town of Acushnet”.
This newly enacted session law supports Acushnet’s efforts to modernize its charter.
