Press Release
Rowers, spectators, and waterfront enthusiasts are invited to kick off the spring season with one of the region’s most unique maritime events: the Wicked Whaleboat Challenge, set for Saturday, and open to the public, May 2, at Pope’s Island Marina, 102 Pope’s Island (Rte. 6), New Bedford.
Race day begins with an 8 a.m. check-in, followed by the first crew starting at 9 a.m.. Spectators are encouraged to line the dock for an up-close view of the action as crews navigate a course designed to test not only speed, but precision, teamwork, and seamanship.
Unlike traditional rowing races, the Wicked Whaleboat Challenge emphasizes skill-based maneuvers rooted in classic whaleboat handling. Crews face a timed, staggered course featuring backwards rowing starts, tight port and starboard turns, and even a person-overboard recovery drill involving “BOB,” the event’s infamous overboard dummy. At any given time, three boats will be on the course, ensuring a dynamic and spectator-friendly experience.
Teams compete in identical fiberglass replica Beetle style whaleboats, making the event accessible to crews from around the globe. This year’s event will have crews from San Francisco to London.
Following the races, attendees can enjoy a festive waterfront atmosphere featuring a community chili tasting and fresh New England chowder courtesy of local New Bedford favorite, The Black Whale who has sponsored the event for years. Visitors will have the chance to vote for their favorite “Best-est” chili while mingling with crews and fellow spectators.
Awards are presented for first, second, and third place, along with the tongue-in-cheek “Drowned Captain” award, given to the team that takes the longest to recover BOB from the water.
With its blend of competition, tradition, and lighthearted fun, the Wicked Whaleboat Challenge promises an exciting day on the water for participants and spectators alike. Admission for spectators is free, making it an ideal outing for families, locals, and visitors looking to experience New Bedford’s rich maritime culture firsthand.
