 New Boater Law

April 1, 2026 by Staff Writer

A new law in Massachusetts will begin on Wednesday April 1st requiring all motorboat operators to complete a boating safety course. The law will be implemented in two phases:

Anyone born after January 1st, 1989, must complete the course by April 1st, 2026

Anyone born on or before January 1st, 1989, must complete the course by April 1st, 2028

The course covers safety rules, boat operation, emergency procedures and more. The focus of this new law is to save lives on the waterways of Massachusetts by helping boaters become more knowledgeable about the rules and regulations on the water. There are several options to obtain the certificate including both in-person and online.

Additional regulations on the new law are forthcoming and for further information please visit – https://www.mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-boating-law-summary

For questions or comments on the new law please contact – boatsafetycourse@mass.gov
