New Bedford provided three chances to join in the No Kings 3 protest held around the caountry, and the world, on Saturday, 3/28/26. Protesters took to the streets to protest the authoritarian policies and actions of the Trump administration.
About 1,000 people gathered at Buttonwood Park at noon and lined the streets with homemade signs. About 100 went to the Route 18 footbridge at 10 a.m.
At 3 p.m. in New Bedford, 400-500 people started out at Third District Court and went around the corner to the Hastings Keith Federal Building, then to the Frederick Douglass memorial, and finally in front of City Hall. Speakers at each stop railed against the Trump administration’s treatment of immigrants, the war in Iran, and policies that favor the rich.
“We don’t do quiet in New Bedford,” said Lisa Barreira Lemieux of the Greater Southeastern Mass. Labor Council, speaking in front of the Frederick Douglass Memorial.
Other speakers included Ricardo Rosa, emceee; Rev. Karen LeBlanc, First Unitarian Church, NB; Luisa Carina Cu Raymundo, Ixcan Quiche, Guatemala, Student, Member Movimiento Cosecha; Richard Drolet, Labor activist and community activist with the SE MA Coalition for a Free Palestine; Tonianne Wong, Unitarian church; Jaqui, high school student, leader in Juvenos por Justicia; Deen Haleem, public defender; Fredericka Reis Freire, high school student organizer; Alicia Lopez Gonzales, Mujeres Victorias/LUCE Network.
Drummers from Batucada Otu Level entertained and drummed as the crowd marched.
No Kings 3 drew approximately 8 million people nationwide at more than 3100 protests. Learn more at https://www.nokings.org
