Science Cafe

November 26, 2024 by Staff Writer

Please join us for New Bedford Science Café on Tues., 12/3, from 6 to 8 p.m.  at The Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase St., New Bedford. Open to everyone. Free, save for the beer!

Our next guest, Lukas Rieppel, teaches the history of science and directs the Science Technology & Society Program at Brown University. His topic will be: “Rethinking The Politics of Fossil Collecting.“

Lukas’s book, Assembling the Dinosaur; Fossil Hunters, Tycoons, and the Making of a Spectacle, tells the story of how scientists discovered the first dinosaurs and mounted them into impressive museum displays.

Starting 150 years ago, American scientists began excavating cartloads of fossils in the Badlands, despite the objections of Native people. These fossils were used to support an erroneous theory of evolutionary progress that helped justify the imperial expansion of the U.S.
