Fairhaven’s $70 million wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) upgrade is on schedule, according to public works superintendent Vinnie Furtado. The town is also on track to receive about $12 million in loan forgiveness. The town of Mattapoisett will also pay about $12 million; the town received $1 million in ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act ) funds; and the town has collected about $2 million from ratepayers from a $25 capital fee, leaving about $43 million that will have to be borrowed.
Mr. Furtado said the BPW is pursuing a 0% loan.
The project is required to meet new EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards to remove nitrogen from sewage.
The project requires constructing a nitrogen removal building, which is where the recycling center was, on the south side of the Arsene Street property. The center has been moved to the north side of the BPW building.
If the project stays on track it will be completed by August of 2026.
