February is here! ’Tis good and bad it is.
It’s bad because it’s he coldest month. The month of the frozen marsh pictures and fluffy snow that piles up and up and up (at least we hope it’s fluffy).
But it also means that winter is half behind us. Next month is March…in just a couple of weeks, March will be just a couple of weeks away. Crazy March. The transition month. In like a lion, out like a lamb (we hope).
The old boat is itching to get out. The wood pile is shrinking in the driveway. But, the winter robins have not come yet to eat the berries on the big holly tree. I’ve been watching, waiting. The berries are plentiful this year. Some years, the birds don’t come. Some years I just miss them. The way they converge on that tree by the hundreds, they just devour the berries in less than a day. But I’ll keep watch. I know you love those pictures. At least I do.
We have some meeting coverage for you this week. See page 4 for some stuff from the last Select Board meeting in Fairhaven.
Our cover story is about Union Wharf and the fixin’ up going on over there. They’ve been working in phases, and it looks like we’re getting to the end of the track.
Speaking of tracks, where’s the train?
Yeah, right. This year, they tell us with a straight face. This year. Been waiting for the train my whole life. Every time they mention it, I remember my Aunt Cil, Cecelia Attallah, who had her own beauty shop called “Ivy’s Beauty Salon” on Purchase Street in New Bedord near the Common Park. She took the train from New Bedford to Boston every day for weeks to learn the trade. I guess that would’ve been in the 1940s. There were not a lot of woman owned businesses of any sort then. There are many of a certain age who remember training with her, working for her. She was one of the first. A pioneer. It would be nice if others had the same opportunities she had 80 years ago. GAWD, we are pathetic sometimes. Let’s get this DONE, people.
There’s other stuff in here of course, including some Black History Month events. Be sure to check out ALL the pages in this week’s little miracle. And while you do, please be sure to notice who our advertisers are so you can tell them you saw their ads in the Neighb News.
Until next week then, see ya
