Press Release
Acushnet Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paula J. Bailey, and Kindergarten Teacher, Jo-Ann Silva, are pleased to share that the Kindergarten class is participating in the Discover Dairy’s Adopt a Cow program this school year.
The Adopt a Cow lesson is part of the free Discover Dairy program. The program provides a fun, year-long experience for students to be able to get an inside look at dairy farming by adopting a cow for their classroom.
Acushnet Kindergarten students adopted a 94-pound dairy calf named Oreo from MacGlaflin farm in Vermont. Oreo is a Holstein cow, born on Sept. 13, 2023. Kindergarteners are connected virtually with Oreo through photos, live chats and stories about her life on the farm.
The program includes lessons, videos, activities, crafts and recipes for students. Students also take turns bringing the classroom stuffed cow home for a special family writing project, “The Adventures of Oreo.”
Silva is provided with Discover Dairy activity sheets and lessons for her kindergarten class that follow Next Generation Science Standards and Common CORE standards in Math, Reading and Science.
“Our students love this program,” said Silva. “They look forward to updates about Oreo each month. This program creates an interactive and educational experience in the classroom allowing students to learn about farming and the impact it has on our community.
The program allows Kindergarten through grade eight classrooms all over the United States to bring the dairy farm into their day-to-day curriculum. Discover Dairy is an interactive cross-curricular, multi-leveled lesson series, that incorporates Math, Science, Reading and Social Studies concepts to show students where milk comes from and how dairy farms contribute to the world every day.
