Paying Up
Dear Frankie,
At the vet’s last week, a lady brought in a dog that was hit by a car.
After the vet examined the dog, the lady met with him to discuss the dog’s injuries and treatment costs.
When she left the meeting, she was crying. My mom asked her what was wrong, and the lady said the doctor told her the dog needed a $5,000.00 operation. The lady said she explained to the vet that she didn’t have that kind of money, and he said that the dog would have to be put down.
Don’t you think the vet was mean not to have taken care of that poor dog?

Dear Louie,
I know the vet’s decision sounds cold-hearted, but what choice did he have? The dog was seriously injured and needed the kind of treatment that only he could provide.
If the lady couldn’t pay for her dog’s care, who do you suggest pay the vet for his services?
Veterinarian hospitals don’t get financial support from the government like human hospitals. I know there is medical dog insurance, but it’s also expensive.
Unfortunately, Louie, one of the hard facts of life is that not every problem has a solution.
