Palmers Island Cleanup

October 4, 2023 by Staff Writer

Sat., 10/7, 8:30 a..m. to noon. Meet at bottom of Gifford St., New Bedford. Pre-register at operationcleansweep. net (not required). Gloves, pickers and bags provided. Wear close-toed shoes. Sponsored by Operation Cleansweep, Coast Sweep, World Oceans Day.

Six-acre Palmers Island, located on the Acushnet River on the west side of the entrance to New Bedford Harbor, has been the scene of great heroism and tragedy. The lighthouse was once considered one of New England’s most picturesque.

Palmers Island is now home to a local park, and offers beach access in need of some TLC: Trash & Litter Control.

Many volunteers are needed to make Palmers Ilsand the picturesque island nature intended it to be. This is our only cleanup of Palmers Island this year.
