NWS discussion chat as of Jan 25, 2022 at 115AM is sprinkling in some foreboding vocabulary that spells concern for the weekend. Potential, impactful, uncertainty, and deterministic are in this Saturday’s weather wheel of fortune. This kind of chat usually has copious snow on the ground, and front page headlines, when it’s all over.

January 2015 holds the big snow trophy for the past 7 years, with 2 blizzards just days apart the last week of the month.
Near blizzard conditions on Jan 24, dumped 8.5″ in Acushnet. East Falmouth (10 miles across the bay) was buried with 15.3″ and a gust of 75MPH was reported at Block Island, then a full blown blizzard on Jan 26-28 2015 meant business. West Island Town Beach had gusts to 60 mph, with 19″ of snow in the lot. January 2020: Least snowiest year 16.8″ or 21.5″ below normal for season.
January 2019: Thunderstorms and lots of rain – wettest Jan since 2006. Month’s snow 1.5″
January 30, 2018: had 6″ with rain changing to heavy wet snow that went into a flash freeze. Total month snow of 16″ was 5.3″ above nomal (Acush)
January 2017: logged 21.3″ for the month or 10.8″ above normal.
January 2016: a snow storm on 17-18 had 4.3″ or 11.1″ month total.
