Well, it truly is the end of an era. Jackson’s Variety, which operated for 50 years, and was Buster’s before that, is gone from the Fairhaven landscape. The building had a devastating fire last year, and the building requires extensive rehabilitation to be usable again. The family decided that they were all close enough to retirement that they didn’t want to take on the task. They sold the building and took down the iconic sign (see page 12).
They said the new owner will keep the building and rehab it, not knock it down. That’s good. It’s a bit of a different-looking building. It has character. I hope they are able to save it.
I don’t remember Jackson’s, exactly, as a kid. But I do remember penny candy stores and the people who worked in them. They had a lot of patience for little kids trying to maximize the use of their change.
Good luck to the new owners. We look forward to seeing some activity back in that building, even though we’re pretty sure it won’t be a penny candy place.
We have some meeting coverage for you this week. Selectboard is on page 4 (can you say “loooooong”?). Zoning Board of Appeals is on page 18. Both meetings held discussions on the changes to the design of the Oxford School project. It seemed like a sudden change in the final weeks before they are breaking ground, but, apparently, the ZBA voted on it a couple of years ago.
The Selectboard is supposed to hold a special meeting to discuss the new Rogers School proposal (see last week’s issue). They didn’t set an exact date, but they indicated they wanted it early next week, so we might not be able to list it for you. So, if you want to hear that, you’ll have to call ’em up or visit the town’s calendar on the website to join in. In any case, we’ll be covering it (hopefully). We do miss meetings, I’m sorry to say. We can only do so much with our limited resources.
