Bill Gallant of Lakeville, took advantage of high winds to go kite boarding at the beach on Causeway Road, West Island on Monday, 3/5/18, at around 3:30 p.m. The high winds and big gusts nearly turned out to be too much for Mr. Gallant, who had to switch to a smaller kite. Even then, the small kite (pictured here), pulled him off his feet right from the ground. But he was persistent, fixed the lines, grabbed his board, and headed into the cold water. The wind was clocking in at more than 20 MPH, although that reading came from elsewhere in Fairhaven and was probably low. It seemed to be closer to 30 MPH, with recorded gusts of up to 60 on that day. The temperature was in the low 30’s, but the high winds made it feel much colder than that. Gale warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for Buzzards Bay. A gale force wind is 35 to 50 mph.
