Follow the Halloween Trail… if you dare

Welcome to our 18th annual Halloween Trail. 

Most are drive/walk by or wander around this year. But at least two are still sending you through the gauntlet of horror, twisting around the yards, with who-knows-what jumping out to scare the bejeebers out of you. Don’t be surprised, though, if a few others do the same…unannounced.

See “Off the Trail but still worth the trip” on page 5 for other events like the Horribles Parade.

Please be respectful when you visit and are wandering around the yards. Remember that these are people’s private yards. Don’t touch, try not to get too scared. Feel free to scream. 

 

Let Us Begin

1: 70 Oliver Street/Haunts for Hope Back for the ninth year! The yard will be alive all weekend! So come on by and walk around, but watch your back just in case some­thing comes alive. The Yard is lit every night dusk till 9 and the yard will be alive (people dressed up) this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10/27, 28, 29.

We plan on having some baked goods, and are raising money for Boston Children’s Hospital. Find “Yard of Terror/Haunts for Hope” on Facebook for links to donate. BONUS: We also understand the little rivalry stared last year with the neighbors has grown. So Oliver Street is a good one to start with! Submitted photo.

2: 60 Oxford Street Ole Oxford Haunt, our own Manny Souza and family are still at it. They will have the whole gauntlet (literally). Walk through at your peril, and be prepared for the screaming ghouls and noisy implements of destruction. Or, if you prefer, just check it out from the street. We assure you: Lots of people do! They have started already and will go right through to Halloween night: Dusk to 9 p.m., except on Halloween, 10/31, when they will go much later.  Submitted photos.

Head to the center of town, where we KNOW there are other places that are spooky. It’s a veritable Little Salem out there on Halloween night, with all kinds of ghouls and goblins running around. Be sure to go by on the Big Night to see special things that are only put out on that one night. Many are decorated already, but be sure to go at night because the lights are spine tingling.

3: 6 William Street This ominous looking house is lit up with a different color depending on the night, starting at 6 p.m. from now until Halloween. And you’ll have to gather up your courage to walk through this yard for sure. House is lit up nightly and is deco­rated. Candy on Halloween only. Submitted photo.

4: 127 Laurel Street. You’re now getting to the heart of the center and the heart of the real Halloween­town, where you might encounter this fine fellow (ahem).

5: 66 Pleasant Street Well They’re #5 this year, but they still have those two 6’s! Lights are on just before dusk until around 11. The timer has been haunted this year, though, so beware on a night if it is not lit up.

 

There are many others on Pleasant Street, too, so take your time, ride up and down all these streets in the center of town.  Submitted photo.

8: Green Street. Oh, and don’t forget Green Street, too. That corner by the UU church is bound to be populated by creatures you’ve never encountered before. Many are decorated now and especially this weekend.

Unitarian Universalist Church welcomes 

trick-or-treaters!

Members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Fairhaven invite costumed kids to come by for treats and spooky fun on Halloween evening from 5 p.m. til the candy runs out. 

Come see the decorations and collect some goodies at the corner of Green and Center streets, a traditional hot spot for trick-or-treating. There may be some Instagrammable photo ops! 

The event will be canceled in case of rain.

8: NEW THIS YEAR! 86 Church Street/Bellamy’s Pirate Cove They yard was almost finished days before press time, so we’re thinking it’s completely done by now. Open nightly, and Halloween night from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Be prepared for anything! Submitted photo

Now head back north on one of the main drags (Green,, Pleasant, Adams) and pop up Washington Street 

Before you head to Sconticut Neck Road, take a detour on Temple Place. Sorry I didn;t get there to take pics, but  I have it on good authority that there are decorated properties there.

Then, back to Washington and  head to Sconticut Neck Road. Your first stop is John Street, take Timothy on your left almost right after Route 6.

9: 17 John Street We have it on good authority that John Street has LOADS of great yards all decorated for your spooking pleasure. Up and running every night is #17, best after 6:30/7 when all the lights are on. Sub­mitted photo.

10: 62 Hacker Street. Oh,  yeah, Elvis might be on the block! We’ve got some creatively creepy minds, or, maybe creepily creative minds. Either way…swing by any night from now until Halloween after 6:30 p.m. when the lights are on.

11: West Island Now, head to West Island, south along Sconticut Neck road. We have it on great authority that there are more than a few yards on the way that will also welcome you, so pay attention.

When you get to the island, just cruise around. You’ll find lots of fun and scary places to visit.

Acushnet

Now we’re heading north to Acushnet for one stop officially on the trail, but we KNOW there are more. Keep your eyes open.

13: 11 Mon­mouth Avenue. Head to Middle Road and then to Monmouth, just a few blocks after the police station. The Baldwins are at it again and scarier than ever.  Submitted photo.

Dartmouth

And last, but definitely not least, our Dartmouth stop. We KNOW there are others, so keep your eyes peeled (not literally).

14: 10 Stonewall Manor Oh…the name alone “Stonewall Manor” makes me shiver! Fully opera­tional now and lit up every night (weather permitting) from dusk until 11, through Halloween. Submitted photo.

Haunted Halloween Party

Fairhaven TV’s 6th annual Haunted Halloween Party will be held on Thurs., 10/26, from 5–8 p.m., at Fairhaven Town Hall, 40 Center St., Fairhaven. FREE. A safe and fun environment to trick-or-treat plus a big party.

Trunk or Treat

Fairhaven Firefighters Local 1555 presents their 2nd annual Trunk or Treat, Sat., 10/28, Hastings Middle School, 20 School St., Fairhaven, starting at 6 p.m. (5:30 to set up your trunks). FREE. Bring the kids, dress up in your Halloween best to get some treats.

Haunted Animal Shelter

Join us at Fearhaven’s Haunted Shelter on Sat., 10/28, 5–7 p.m., at Fairhaven Animal Shelter, 200 Bridge St., Fairhaven. Featuring friendly ghouls and monsters from 5–6 p.m., scary ghouls and monsters from 6–7 p.m. Costumes welcome, ghouls tolerated. 

Walk through the chilling kennels. Candy, donuts, coffee, hot chocolate. Wheelchair accessible. FREE. Dona­tions accepted and appreciated. (Park across the street at Walmart.)

Horribles Parade

Join the North Fairhaven Improve­ment Association for the annual Halloween Horribles parade on Sun., 10/29, 5 p.m., starting at Benoit Square, along Main Street to St. Mary’s Church. Prizes for Most Horrible, Most Original, Most Beautiful for toddler to 4 yrs, 5–8 yrs., 9–12 yrs., 13–16 yrs., adults. Free treats and hot chocolate. FREE and open to everyone. 

Acushnet Halloween Parade

Join us on Tuesday, October 31st beginning at 6pm for the annual Halloween Parade. Please meet in front of the fire station on Russell Street in Acushnet at Parting Ways.

The Fire Department will be distributing candy bags and apples outside the fire station. 

Halloween Parade

The volunteer witches of the Marion Art Center have been brewing up plans for resuming our annual Halloween Parade around the town on Monday, October 31. Costumed characters of all ages are invited to join in for this fun family event! Participants should meet in front of the Marion Music Hall, 164 Front St. (we’ll line up on Cottage Street) at 4:00pm. Under the direction of Hannah Moore, the Sippican Elementary School drummers will lead the parade of witches and princesses, goblins and ghouls, wild animals, and spooky spirits. The parade route will head south on Front Street, up Main Street, north onto Spring Street and back down Cottage to the Music Hall. Once back at the Music Hall, the good witches of the Marion Art Center will hand out surprise goody bags. Come one, come all!

Padanaram Village

Tues., 10/31, 5 p.m. Join us for our Annual Costume Parade to start your Night of Trick-or Treating! Local businesses will be open to hand out candy; Dancing by Dancers Edge.

Parade begins at promptly at 5:00! Start in front of New Bedford Yacht Cluib, 238 Elm St., Dartmouth; end at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 1351 Elm St. Sponsored by Padanaram Community Coalition and The Padanaram Business Association.
