It’s a small group, but with a big heart.
The West Island Red Hat Society, a group of a dozen or so older women who wear red hats and socialize at least once a month, managed to collect $1,100 for a local family in need this holiday season.
“I’m amazed,” said Cathi Konicki, who organized the fund-raiser.
With fewer opportunities to give this season, she thought it would be nice for a local group to help a local family.
She contacted one of the local schools and they recommended a family of four, headed by a mom who had left a bad relationship behind her. The hard-working woman is having a tough time making ends meet, so the extra cash is a sure bet to help her make a memorable holiday season for her children. The gift was given to her in time for Thanksgiving.
Ms. Konicki packaged up the gift cards, some little sparkly hats and a couple of other little things, into a festive holiday gift bag. The gift cards include discount department stores, grocery stores and local restaurants.
She said some pretty good things come out of “the rock in Buzzards Bay.”
