The largest civilian sailing school vessel in The United States is anchored off West Island. The Oliver Hazard Perry was spotted 3/4 of a mile off North Point West Island, on the northeast corner of WI on Wednesday, 8/16, at 3 p.m.
The ship is 200 feet long with 14,000 square feet of sails and seven miles of rope and rigging. The ship is based in Rhode Island. NOTE: If you are going to venture out to the back side of the island to take a look, take bug spray with you! The SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is Rhode Island’s official state “Educational Sailing Vessel” and an official Tall Ship for RI, according to its website.
