Weekend nor’easter was a soaker

September 30, 2026 by Staff Writer

A relatively rare nor’easter dumped rain up and down the coast over the weekend, with New Bedford getting a whopping 7.49 inches in just a couple of days. Although the winds were not as bad as originally forecast, they did bring down some trees, which still have their leaves on them, making it easier to get toppled.

Wind gusts were mostly in the 50-60 MPH range, but did get up to 70 MPH in some places. Approximately 2200 lost power during the storm.

Fairhaven got 5.71 inches of rain, Acushnet got 4.08”.

All in all it was a pretty good storm that managed to get almost all outdoor events canceled. Most businesses stayed open.

At Off the Hook right next to West Island a group of hardy neighbors and other travelers decided to have a “hurricane party,” although it wasn’t quite a hurricane

“We’re not going to give up on summer yet,” said Jen Pease, who was there with her kids, and a few others, for a total of six kids and four adults, complete with coloring/activity books and other games.

She noted that the excursion was better than being cooped up “with this crew.”

Nor’easters are named for their strong northeast winds as they move up the coast and spin counter clockwise. They usually come a little later in the fall and can cause widespread flooding and power outages.

Cape Cod got hammered, with erosion compromising houses on the shore. The storm churned up a crazy amount of sea foam that spread into streets in Scituate, and churned up beaches in Marshfield and in Maine.
