VFW Post 2892 in Fairhaven is closing its doors for good. The organization has been struggling for quite a few years, with veterans George Brownell and Jeff Cardoza stepping up about 12 years ago to save the post. Mr. Cardoza has been the commander for most of those years. He has borne the brunt of the burden to keep the place open, trying to get the kitchen open, and trying to increase patronage of the bar and the function room.
But Mr. Cardoza suffered a stroke in May (see story on page 12), and the strugges got worse. He posted on the VFW’s Facebook page that the organization is $180,000 in debt he said, and the members made the decision to close.
“With great sorrow I’m here to say the VFW is closing this [Sunday] because of my stroke,” wrote Mr. Cardoza. “I have not been there much since Memorial Day and the club fell behind. It’s hard for me, lots of great friends and memories I’ll never forget.”
He thanked all the patrons for their support over the years.
There will be two more events in the function room*. One will be on Friday with DJ Sobah, starting at 8:30 p.m., and is being promoted as a goodbye event for the public to share in the nostalgia of the good times people have shared over the years. The other is a preplanned event on Saturday night, 11/9, with a live band, starting at 8 p.m. (see ad on page 3 of the PDF). The VFW’s last day open will be Sunday*
The VFW is located at 109 Middle Street in Fairhaven.
*Fixes errors from previous versions, there are two events, not one.
