The body of a missing UMass Dartmouth student was found in Fairhaven in the Acushnet River on Tuesday, 1/16/24. The Bristol County District Attorney’s office said Flordan “Flo” Bazile, 21, an accomplished track athlete, appeared to have died by suicide.
In an email to students, UMD Chancellor, Mark Fuller, said Mr. Bazile was described by teammates as “hard-working, energetic, a champion, and a great friend.”
“It is always heartbreaking to see such a promising young life cut short,” wrote Dr. Fuller.
He referred students to the Counselling Center and the Center for Religious an Spiritual Life, and staff and faculty to the Employee Assistance Center.
Plans to honor Mr. Bazile’s memory will be announced, he said.
Mr. Bazile had just been named Track Rookie Athlete of the Week for two weeks in a row.
According to news reports, Mr. Bazile was last seen on campus around 2 a.m. on Monday, and was reported to be in Fairhaven later that day.
Authorities searched the water around Howland Road and Coggeshall Street.
