The American, Provincetown poet Mary Oliver often asked, “What will you do with your one precious life?”
For Matilda (Tillie) Almeida, she has a list of responses given that she just turned 100 years old on October 9.
At the 100 year mark, Tillie’s first response would be Mother of four children and their spouses, Grandmother of four grandchildren and their spouses, and great grandmother to one great granddaughter. On a daily basis she still remarks how lucky she is to have such a wonderful family.
Throughout her life, she also filled her days married to her husband of 54 years, working at Cherry and Webb to which you might often find her walking the Fairhaven/New Bedford Bridge to get to work because she just loved to walk, and raising many dogs. It was at Cherry and Webb’s that she made her lifelong friends.
When Tillie was younger, she also loved walking from their home on Mulberry Street in Fairhaven to Fort Phoenix or to daily mass at St. Joseph’s Church.
Tillie finds it easy to laugh, always made your favorite cake for birthdays and your favorite cookies when you returned home from college.
Tillie is celebrated with love by not only her family and her friends, but her children’s family and friends. We extend a round of applause and cheer as she hits the 100 mark.
