So, who says you have to travel south to see a real palm tree? Jim Dalton, on Hathaway Street in Fairhaven has a couple of thriving palm trees and a healthy banana tree.
“Growing up I used to say that I wanted to live where palm trees grow. Now I do!” wrote Mr. Dalton in an email. “Most people don’t know you can grow them around here (the banana plants won’t produce fruit, though).”
He said he has to cut the banana stalks after the first frost, but they come back even bigger the next year.
“The palm is a cold-hardy variety and can live though our winters,” he wrote.
So, as you contemplate the first blast of winter hitting us this weekend, think if Jim, looking out over his palm trees.
