On Mon., 10/1 at 10:01 (clever, huh?) the Town of Acushnet will be testing the emergency notification system, “Code Red.” Calls will automatically go to home telephone numbers. For cellphone alerts you need to opt in. Visit the town’s website for Code Red details at www.acushnet.ma.us
Acushnet Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher encourages residents to sign up to have their cellphones added to the system.
“Emergencies are not scheduled events, state Chief Gallagher. “Some messages can wait for you to get home and listen to the answering machine. During an emergency, your ability to make decisions is time sensitive and messages should be received as quickly as possible.”
Cellphone numbers will only be used for Code Red emergencies.
The federal government is also testing two alert systems to all cellphone numbers on Wed., 10/3, at 2:18 and 2:20 p.m.
