Sustainability committee announces “Drawdown Challenge”

April 12, 2018 by Staff Writer

Press Release

The Fairhaven Sustainability Committee invites friends and neighbors to join Team SouthCoast April 4–25 for the Drawdown EcoChallenge www.drawdown.org/ecochallenge: a free, fun and social way to learn about and take action to protect our environment.

According to Team Captain, Ann O’Brien, “This is a very cool project! “The website is full of wonderful and innovative ways we can protect our environment. I enjoyed simply reading it.

Deirdre Healy, team member and chair of the Fairhaven Sustainability Committee, added, “It’s organized into seven categories ranging from food to transportation. There is a challenge for everyone, so I think we can win.”

Northwest Earth Institute, a recognized leader in transformational sustainability education, is collaborating with Project Drawdown to offer this 21-day engagement program focused on protecting our environment. Project Drawdown is an international nonprofit organization of scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs, and advocates that offers a collective array of solutions to protect our climate. In the pursuit of sharing its findings, the organization has released the book Drawdown, the first of many projects to widely disseminate this information.

Through 4/25, individuals and teams from around the world are invited to take part in simple daily activities to reduce their carbon footprints. At the end of the Challenge, the teams with the most points will win great prizes, including copies of Drawdown and a one-hour video session with Paul Hawken, the Executive Director of Project Drawdown

According to Hawken, “All of life is comprised of self-organizing systems and the Drawdown EcoChallenge is exactly that — people coming together to share, learn, support, imagine, and innovate for a better world. We are honored to be a part of this significant and brilliant initiative.”

The Challenge is free and open to the public and the Fairhaven Sustainability Committee will enter each person who registers for Team SouthCoast into a raffle drawing for one of three earth-friendly gift baskets valued at $125, $100 and $75. Participants will receive a raffle ticket per 10 points earned.
