A small tremor with a magnitude of 1.6, startled residents in parts of Fairhaven and Mattapoisett, Saturday night about 11:09PM.

From Tracie Blanchard, Adams Street, Fairhaven: “Such a loud bang. I thought something hit the house!”

From Nancy McGrath-Jorge, Mattapoisett: “It was an earth shattering boom, not only shook our houses but also had an explosive sound. Holy Smokes, If thats a mild tremor, I pray to the Lord I never experience a real quake. It was like an explosion that shook our house. The sound was deafening.”

The tremor was recorded at Weston Observatory in Boston.

A more potent tremor occurred on Feb 11, 2014 at 548PM, and registered 2.5. The center was near Dartmouth.

These are rare events but not unexpected according to seismologists.
