Press Release
Join other brave film fans at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 for a spine-tingling viewing of “Phantom of the Opera,” the 1925 silent film, with live organ accompaniment by Tim Evans, music director of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Fairhaven, 102 Green Street, Fairhaven.
Recoil in horror as the Phantom is unmasked! Gasp as the chandelier falls!
Journey 100 years into the past to experience Lon Chaney’s performance as the horribly disfigured Phantom who lurks beneath the Paris Opera.
This film, which includes script cards that help to tell the familiar story, set the mark high for horror films to come, including “The Mummy” and “Frankenstein.”
It was adapted from the novel by Gaston Leroux, later popularized by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster 1986 musical.
An accomplished theater organist, Evans will play improvisations on original themes to interpret the action on the screen, as opera singer Christine becomes the protégé of the mysterious Phantom and is romanced by Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, leading to an epic clash and conclusion.
Evans has been music director of “A Christmas Carol” at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester and performed on the Wurlitzer at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts in Savannah, Ga. He has broad experience in piano and organ performance and as a vocalist; music directing and accompanying stage performances; teaching at the college level; and as a church musician.
A suggested freewill offering of $20 per person will benefit the Organ Fund. Work is underway to restore the pipe organ, which was last refurbished in the 1970s.
Light refreshments will follow the performance.
The church is accessible to the handicapped via a ramp off the Center Street driveway, where there is reserved parking. For more information about the church, call 508-992-7081 or visit uufairhaven.org.
