Please join us for New Bedford Science Café, Tues., 12/7, 6–8 p.m., The Vault Music Hall & Pub, 791 Purchase St., New Bedford. Open to everyone. Free, save for the beer!
Our guest Grant O’Rielly, a nuclear physicist with the Physics Department at UMass Dartmouth, will discuss “Fusion Power: The Carbon-Free Solution, But When?”
The promise of power from nuclear fusion is a nearly limitless energy that emits no carbon and avoids the pitfalls of nuclear fission. As Grant will share with us, both government labs and private companies have been making progress toward fusion energy, to the extent that some groups (one at MIT!) claim their fusion reactors will be operational within ten years. “Fusion is the vaccine for climate change,” noted one researcher. Is the promise about to be realized? We request that those who join us in-person be vaccinated. Facemasks are strongly recommended.
