Our guest Dr. Marc Kuchner will discuss “Forty Ways You Can Do NASA Science –Or, How I Almost Went to Jail,” about his quest to give everyone a chance to participate in scientific research. Marc is an astrophysicist and NASA’s “citizen science” officer.
NASA now supports more than 40 different scientific teams that invite the public to take part in their research using the latest spacecraft data. Through these projects, volunteers have made countless scientific discoveries, including most of the known comets, hundreds of exoplanets, and a new kind of aurora. But until recently, these citizen science projects were rare. Opening the doors of science has been a battle with skeptics, personal doubts, and pesky civil-war-era laws.
Marc will tell the story of his journey from solo scientist to NASA’s chief participatory science evangelist— and help you find your new favorite way to Do NASA Science.
