Maggie Jackson, award-winning author and science writer, will discuss “Cringeworthy: Discovering the Overlooked Promise of Awkwardness.” In a time of fear and flux, awkwardness seems to be just another unwelcome wrench in the works, a disruption best avoided. But new research reveals this state of mind can unexpectedly help, not hinder, human well-being.
Maggie will share the role that awkwardness and other aversive states such as uncertainty play in fostering mutual understanding and resilience. By spotlighting a rupture in the social fabric, awkward moments invite us to pause, tune into hidden realities, and co-create new understanding. Far more than a comic punchline, awkwardness is a facet of humanity that we can no longer afford to ignore and avoid.
A former Boston Globe columnist, Maggie is the author most recently of Uncertain: The Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure, a National Book Award nominee. Her books will be for sale.
