Tues., 10/7, from 6–8 p.m., The Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase St., New Bedford. Open to everyone. Free, save for the beer!
Our guest, Robert Hellström, Ph.D., Professor of Geography at Bridgewater State University, will discuss “Micro-Climates; How Climate Change is Influencing Local Weather.”
Micro-climates are very localized climates impacted by landscapes. In our own region, think of less predictable wind patterns over Buzzards Bay or more frequent coastal flooding. Understanding micro-climates and how they impact our resources, Rob feels, is more important than understanding climate change itself, because such knowledge can help a community be at-the-ready for weather anomalies and remain resilient.
Over the years, Rob, equipped with instruments, has gained evidence of significant micro-climates. His snow stakes and soil temperature probes at Harvard Forest gave proof of warming and decreased snowfall. His weather stations in the Peruvian Andes show climate changing more rapidly at higher elevations. He’s currently helping students at New Bedford’s Youth Opportunities Unlimited to install a weather station. Turning youth into citizen scientists can excite local action, he believes.
