Our guest Blake Dinius, entomologist educator for Plymouth Country, will discuss “The New Tick on the Block: The Lone Star Tick and Tick Biology 101.”
The Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is a historically southern species that has crept northward. It is associated with several diseases, and, of note, has been correlated with Alpha-Gal Syndrome – often termed “red meat allergy”—a condition that can result in allergic reactions to mammalian products, including red meat and dairy, and certain medications.
As tick populations spread, a little education can go a long way toward reducing and even preventing tick-borne diseases.
