Visual artist and science writer Anna Von Mertens will discuss “To Clearly See: How Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt Helped Us Find Our Place in the Universe.”
Up until Leavitt’s seminal discovery at the turn of the 20th century, “our imagined universe was flat,” notes Anna in her recently published monograph Attention is Discovery; The Life & Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. “There was no sense of depth to the stars, no ability to know where we were in space.”
Anna will share the fascinating story of how one of America’s earliest astronomers “changed all this.
