Science Cafe

November 6, 2024 by Staff Writer

Please join us for New Bedford Science Café, Tues., 11/12, 6–8 p.m.,  The Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase St., New Bedford. Open to everyone. Free, save for the beer!

Our guest, Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, Waste Reduction Manager at Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District, will discuss “Holey Socks, Broken Gizmos, Empty Boxes & Stale Food; New & Better Strategies for Managing Our Mountain of Waste.”

“Everything in its place!” That’s important in respect to items we throw out, notes Marissa, whose primary job is making sure nothing goes into Crapo Hill Landfill that can be reused, recycled, repurposed, or composted. As she’ll explain, many items are banned from the landfill—e.g., mattresses, yard waste, clothing and other textiles. There are many new programs that collect & recycle such items. Common recyclables like metal cans and paper, also banned, are sent to state-of-the-art recycling facilities in Rochester & Brockton where magnets, puffs of air and sensors separate objects for new uses.

Which plastics are recyclable? What to do with batteries or pill bottles? Why should we care? Marissa, New Bedford & Dartmouth’s recycling guru, will share numerous tips, including how to buy a backyard composter at a discount!

Free parking in rear of building.
