Acushnet held its annual sing-along and lighting, with its much anticipate visit from Santa, on Sunday, 12/2/18, at Fire Station 1. Acushnet Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher addressed the crowd, noting that the best part was singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” because that meant that the Big Guy was on his way, courtesy of the siren-screaming Acushnet Ladder 1 fire truck.
Chief Gallagher said it was his 32nd year, and he remembered when it was held at the Town Hall, before the “new” fire station was built, around 30 years ago.
He said it was the hard work of the firefighters, who put the display together every year, this year with help from the Boy Scouts.
He also asked the crowd to keep in their thoughts Ray Barlow, who has played a “very important role” in the evening. Mr. Barlow is in the hospital and could not join them on Sunday.
Miss Apple Peach Natasha Moniz, and Miss New Bedford Outstanding Teen Tori Kalisz helped with the festivities, along with a surprise appearance by Miss Bristol County Teen Alyssa Maitoza.
The Ford Middle School Choir led the crowd in the singing, especially for that all-important “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Free hot chocolate and cookies went to anyone who wanted it, and the children got gifts after they visited Santa in the firehouse.
