Acushnet Animal Control Officer, Becky Tomlinson, with the help of Douglas Layport, rescued a barred owl that was hit by a car on January 7.
Mr. Layport posted a few pictures on Facebook, writing that the owl was standing in Middle Road the day before, but then took off. The owls are known for their camouflage abilities, so they could not find it that night.
The next morning, they were able to catch it and take it to the vet.
The bird suffered significant damage to its wing and a detached retina.
The owl was taken to Mattapoisett Animal Hospital and then to Cape Wildlife, where it was euthanized.
“Thank you Doug Layport for helping me getting this little guy to safety and out of harms way,” wrote Ms. Tomlinson on Facebook. “Also, thank you to Dr. Jill O’Brien and her staff at Mattapoisett Animal Hospital. Also thank you Cape Wildlife & all the rehabbers that help these helpless critters!”
