The Acushnet Lions Club held its annual Duck Race on Father’s Day, 6/18/23, dropping 1,000 rubber duckies into the Acushnet River at the Sawmill property.
The ducks made their way down the river, under Main Street, to the finish line behind the NAPA building, where volunteers waited for the little guys to get through the hole in the boom. But, alas, the little buggers bunched up against the barrier, seemingly content to tread water. Eventually, with a little help from the kayak volunteers, the whole lot of ’em slipped under the boom (oops, was not supposed to happen quite like that), and the three little leaders were gathered up and matched up with their sponsors.
First place with Duckie #9 went to Sue Petipas, who won $1,000; second place with Duckie #108 went to Lisa Carvalho, who won $500; and 3rd place with #412 went to Jimmy Vanesse, who won $200.
Mr. Vanesse was on hand to give his opinion of the win.
“It’s great. Are you kidding me? I’ll probably spend it all here,” he said as he sat in the River’s End Cafe.
