Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, which accounts for its rapidly growing popularity in the US.
Fairhaven has two locations with pickleball courts: four courts each at Cushman Park and Fort Phoenix. All are open to the public, but there are scheduled play times, and the courts at Cushman are blended with the tennis courts, which are used by the Fairhaven High School tennis team, limiting public availability during their season.
Organizers say more than 100 people play in Fairhaven each week. This past weekend more than 50 played on Sunday alone.
Lessons for beginners are free. If you are interested in learning how to play, contact Ken Pottel, at farihavenpickleball@gmail.com Lessons are held at Cushman Park on Saturday and Sunday mornings
Advanced/Intermediate players are at Fort Phoenix on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, 8–11 a.m.; Thurday, 2 p.m. to dusk.
