There is an oil lamp in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, which is said to have now burned for 1,500 years. This fall a Boy Scout traveled to Bethlehem with a special oil lantern to bring that flame to Austria, which then traveled to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. This Peace Light is a symbol of mankind’s desire for peace in family, community, the nation and the world.
Michael McCormack, Chairman of the Fall River Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, and his wife Cheryl gathered that flame upon arrival at JFK and since returning to New Bedford have distributed it to hundreds of residents as well as churches and groups in the region.
Continuing the effort to “Spread the Light”, the Peace Light will be available in a special distribution at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, on Sat., 12/16, from noon to 4:00 p.m. Candles will be available or individuals may bring their own or a lantern which is suitable for transporting the flame. Once lit, a candle will be suffused with spirit of the Peace light and can extinguished and re-lit at home. Once there it should be distributed to friends and family and kept lit as long or as often as possible.
