Having been an event planner for many years, I have decorated thousands of Christmas trees…. but none as unique as our first West Island Oyster Trap Tree! I have had a hard time getting into the spirit this year and was inspired after seeing a similar tree erected in Rockland, Maine and wanted to do the same on our island.
It would have not been possible without the generous donation from the owner of West Island Seafood. He allowed us to borrow dozens of his traps, netting and rope.
Also big thanks to Hoppy for his donation of floats, buoys, netting and more to make the tree decorated.
I was able to secure holly bush sprigs from a neighbor on Route 6 and greenery from Kenny’s Garden Center.
It was truly a Hallmark Christmas kind of day with friends and neighbors showing up to help build, string lights, decorate and pass out cookies. The tree will be illuminated every night if people would like to come and take a photo on the bench in front.
I hope everyone enjoys our little island installation.
Happy Holidays to all. And please think of volunteering when it comes time to take it down and return all our borrowed items in January!
