The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum (RJD) and Reverie Theatre Group (RTG) continue their partnership for the free summer program, Shakespeare in New Bedford. Seven performances of The Tempest will take place on the tented patio in the Museum’s garden, 396 County St., New Bedford.
The 2023 season runs Thursday through Saturday, August 17, 18, 19 and August 24, 25, 26 with a show time of 7:30 p.m. There will also be a sensory-friendly matinee at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27. Admission is free; donations are accepted in lieu of a ticket fee. Seating is first-come, first-served.
Attendees will experience the comic tale of Prospero, the overthrown duke of Milan, who maroons his betrayers on a magical island where he creates spells and enchantments that toy with the evildoers until they promise to return him to his throne. RTG’s Megan M. Ruggiero directs this classic story of romance, ambition, revenge, and forgiveness with a twist, as the action of the play will take place in a cybernetic wasteland and explore the intersection between cyberpunk culture and Shakespeare’s most iconic motifs.
This program is supported in part by grants from the Acushnet, Dartmouth, Mattapoisett, Fairhaven, and New Bedford Cultural Councils, local agencies which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
