Press Release
Some people enter public service to make speeches, I got into public service to solve problems. For more than twenty years, I had the privilege of serving Westport on the Selectboard and SRPEDD. I spent thirty years working in the Dartmouth and Acushnet Public Schools. I served my community as a reserve police officer and a call firefighter. All those experiences taught me a lot about what makes a community work.
They also taught me that very few problems get solved by one person. You listen, bring the right people to the table, then you roll up your sleeves and get to work. That is the approach I brought to Beacon Hill when you gave me the opportunity to serve as your State Representative, I am proud to announce that I am running for reelection.
When I first ran for this office, I told you that I wouldn’t be starting from scratch. I had spent decades working with municipal leaders, state officials, regional organizations, educators, first responders, businesses, and residents. I believed those relationships and that experience could help me get to work quickly for our district.
Over my first term, I’ve had the opportunity to put that belief into practice. I’ve worked at building more relationships that bring state resources home to our communities, infrastructure improvements, schools, and public safety. Investing time with our seniors and veterans, supporting local businesses and working families, and ensuring the residents of the 8th Bristol District have someone on Beacon Hill who understands the challenges they face.
I’ve secured important investments for communities throughout the district, including $185K in my first term, and another $2.5M bond bill funding. I’ve filed legislation and worked with Representatives whom I share communities with. Teamwork passes bills and brings more money to our communities. That’s the work I’m most proud of. But I also know that a State Representative’s job can’t be measured only by a list of bills, votes, or dollars in a budget.
Relationships are all stronger, work is underway, and we can deliver even more for the people of the 8th Bristol District. There are opportunities we didn’t have two years ago that we are positioned to pursue today. After serving my first term, I have an even better understanding of where the state government can help our communities, and where we need to push it to do better.
When I first ran for State Representative, we asked you to “Believe in Steve”. You put your trust in me, and I’ve never taken that lightly. This time, I’m not asking you simply to believe in what I might do. I’m asking you to look at what we’ve started together and where we can take it next. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’m excited about what’s still possible. So, yes, we’re still Believin’ in Steven.
I respectfully ask for your vote and the opportunity to continue serving as your State Representative.
Steven J. Ouellette
