The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Cetner, 38 Bethel St., New Bedford, is thrilled to embark on a year-long project engaging women aged 65+ from Greater New Bedford with ties to the fishing industry. Women will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs, including an intergenerational oral history project led by local high school and college-aged women. Herstory is supported by grants from the Association for the Relief of Aged Women and Women’s Fund SouthCoast. Herstory Project Manager and Women’s Fund Fellow Laura Campbell brings extensive experience working with older adults and a professional background in gerontology.
Many older women in the area are connected to commercial fishing through work or family ties, yet a lot of the ethnic, religious, and industry-based organizations and events that once created a sense of community no longer exist. This project aims to combat social isolation, validate the lived experience of these women, and document their stories for the future. The resulting oral histories will become part of the Fishing Heritage Center’s archive and will be shared through a digital exhibit and reception.
If you or someone you know might be interested in participating, please contact Laura Campbell by emailing herstory@fishingheritagecenter.org.
