Obituary: Charlie Gomes

Master Captain Charles R. “Charlie” Gomes, 86, of New Bed­ford passed away Fri­day August 19, 2022 from com­pli­ca­tions related to COVID. He was the husband of Pauline Moreau Gomes for 60 years.

Charlie served in the United States Marine Corps and upon discharge, joined the Merchant Marines, of which he was a member for 45 years. 

In addition to being a licensed master captain, Charlie was a licensed pilot, licensed navigator and environmentalist.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Fairhaven High School Hall of Fame. He excelled in football, baseball and basketball. He was scouted by the St. Louis Browns baseball team but decided to join the Marines and serve his country. During his deployment, Charlie played on the Marines baseball team.

Charlie enjoyed playing cards, golfing, buying lottery tickets, watching sports and meeting friends at McDonald’s in Fairhaven.

He was a member of the Fairhaven Livesey Club, Disabled Veterans of America, Veterans Association of Bristol County, United States Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by his daughter, Leslie Trahan, and grandchildren, Erin Trahan, Andrew Trahan and Chloe Gomes. He is also survived by his nephew, Tommy Gomes, and niece, Tammy Gomes. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Manuel Gomes and Mary (Pires) Gomes Barros, his daughter, Karen Gomes, and his brother, Vern Gomes.

His visitation will be held on Sunday August 28th from 1-3 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett. A celebration of life will follow at the Fairhaven Livesey Club from 4-7 PM. A private burial with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Honor Flight Network, www.honorflight.org, or K9s for Warriors, www.k9sforwarriors.org.
